What kinds of incontinence are there?
STRESS: slight leakage caused by pressure in the pelvic floor area. This
affects about 65% of adults suffering from incontinence. Leakage occurs
during coughing, laughing, sneezing, lifting or during other physical
strain.
URGE: Frequent, sudden, uncontrolled urge to urinate. This is the second
most common type of incontinence. As urine fills the bladder, pressure
increases on both the bladder and the sphincter, causing the sphincter
to involuntarily open and release urine, with very little warning. Some
causes include stroke, aging, and prostate surgery.
OVERFLOW: Leakage of small amounts of urine when the bladder is full.
The individual is unaware that the bladder is full because the message
is not transmitted to the brain. Overflow incontinence is caused by enlarged
prostate, diabetes, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis or pelvic
trauma.
FECAL: Inability to hold bowel movements
What
are the causes of Incontinence?
Bladder weakness can have a number of causes some of which are as follows:
• relaxation of the pelvic muscles, caused by childbirth
• reduced muscle control that can occur with menopause.
• Excess weight control
• Infections or inflammation of the bladder or the urethra.
• Nervous system disorders, illness
• Bladders aggravated by alcohol, caffeine or medications.
• Certain heart and high blood pressure medications
How
can I continue to live a normal life?
The good news is that your life does not have to change. Understanding
this issue and knowing all of your options is the key to staying active.
DIET: Make sure you stay hydrated. Try and drink 6-8 glasses of fluid
each day to help keep your bladder functioning properly. Avoid Bladder
irritating foods; this includes spicy foods, chocolate, citrus fruits,
as well as tomato based foods. Caffeine and alcohol are diuretics which
can contribute to leakage.
EXCERCISE: Keep your muscles toned... Kegel exercises are especially effective
as well as simple and discreet way to strengthen the muscles that control
your bladder.

How
do I know which product is right for me?
Choosing the correct Bladder control protection product is not an exact
science. There may be some trial and error. However, depending upon your
level of incontinence, the Secure line has products for every level. For
small amounts of bladder loss, Secure pads offer light to medium protection.
For moderate amounts Secure liners, beltless or belted undergarments work
well. And for heavy amounts of urine/stool, our protective underwear or
our selection of fitted briefts will work well. Improper product selection
can cause leakage and embarrassment and wetness against skin can cause
the skin to break down. Secure products offer better protection from wetness
and odor on all levels. Be sure to check absorbency levels on our web
site for each product. Call us and let us help you make the correct choice.
What
else can I do?
Be sure and check with your physician about your condition. An examination
can help determine the cause and perhaps offer other ways to manage your
condition. Incontinence affects all people uniquely and it should not
impact your lifestyle. With the right absorbency protection, you can manage
your condition with minimal inconvenience!
